Lymphomas and thyroid: Bridging the gap

2018

The thyroid gland is often involved in the development of neoplastic diseases, including lymphoproliferative disorders. The aim of this paper is to provide a comprehensive overview of the multiple interactions between lymphoma and thyroid. Through an extensive research among the literature, the relationship between lymphomas and thyroid can be established at various levels, and the possible interconnections are here summarized in 5 points: (1) the greater risk of lymphoma development in some thyroid diseases; (2) the primary thyroid lymphoma, with focus on issues related to the diagnosis, differential diagnosis, and treatment; (3) the incidence of thyroid involvement in primitive nodal lymp…

Colorectal Cancer: Metastatic Disease

2021

Most patients diagnosed with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) develop metastases during the disease course after resection of the primary locoregional cancer. To date, the liver represents the most common site of metastatic involvement. Although several different biological and clinical hallmarks exist between the colon and rectum (different embryological origin, anatomy, and molecular biology), mCRC requires similar staging procedures and systemic treatment strategies (first and subsequent lines) in terms of a multimodal approach treatment as a part of a “continuum of care.” Patients affected by oligometastatic disease should undergo an upfront evaluation by a multidisciplinary team for…

Tratamiento neoadyuvante del cáncer de mama operable

2006

Preoperative or neoadjuvant systemic treatment refers to either the first postdiagnosis systemic treatment that a patient receives or indicates that additional subsequent therapy is intended. Randomized controlled clinical trials have shown that preoperative systemic treatment offers the same disease free survival and overall survival benefits as does adjuvant systemic treatment. Neoadjuvant therapy has been found to increase the breast-conserving surgery rate. This therapy also allows to evaluate the primary tumor response to chemotherapy. Additionally, on the basis of the biologic characteristics of a tumor and differences in the response to systemic treatment, primary systemic treatment …

Orbital rhabdomyosarcoma in childhood

1997

Background: Rhabdomyosarcoma is the most common malignant orbital tumor in children. Treatment modalities (individualized therapy or study protocol) have been changed radically. Surgery was supplemented by radiation therapy and chemotherapy. The objective of our retrospective analysis was to define the prognosis in correlation to changes of treatment in an unselected patient group of a single institution. Patients and methods: Between 1954 and 1995, 18 patients (age at presentation 1 month to 17 years, 11 male and 7 females) with orbital rhabdomyosarcoma were diagnosed and treated at our institution. Results: The 5-year survival rate was 76 %. Primary exenteration was replaced by tumor rese…

The role of AXL as mechanism of resistance to trastuzumab and a prognostic factor in breast cancer HER2 positive: A translational approach

2019

Abstract Background Breast cancer (BC) is a heterogeneous disease. HER2+ BC represents between 15-30% of cases. Trastuzumab (T), a monoclonal antibody, has been successfully improved clinical benefits in both adjuvant and in metastatic settings. Despite this evidence, many patients experience resistance to therapy. The objective of this study is to assess AXL as a potential mechanism of resistance and its implication as a prognostic factor. Methods We used three cell lines with acquired resistance to T. Resistant models were generated by treating parental cells (AU565, SKR3, BT474) with constant dose of T (15mg/mL) for 6 months. Cell viability was estimated by MTT assay. Proteins were asses…

Prognostic Impact of Immune Microenvironment Markers in Tumor and Stroma in Resectable Nsclc

2014

ABSTRACT Aim: Tumor-infiltrating immune cells have been proved to play an important role in tumor progression. In this study we have analyzed the expression of 11 immune related genes in both tumor and stroma samples of resectable NSCLC patients. Methods: In this retrospective study FFPE samples from 117 early-stage NSCLC patients of primary tumor tissue were used. The most representative areas of tumor and tumor stroma of each sample were carefully micro-dissected. RT-PCR using hydrolysis probes (TaqMan, Applied Biosystems) was performed to assess the expression of Treg markers such as: CD127, CD25, FOXP3, CTLA-4, IL-10, TGFB-1, LAG-3, GITR and TNFA as well as CD4 and CD8. Relative gene ex…

Impact of chemotherapy on disseminated low-grade glioma in children and adolescents: Report from the HIT-LGG 1996 trial

2011

Background We describe demographic data of disseminated childhood low-grade glioma (DLGG) prospectively recruited in the HIT-LGG 1996 study and evaluate the impact of primary chemotherapy (CT) on the outcome of these tumors, which have previously only been described in small and retrospective series. Patients and Methods The multicenter study HIT-LGG 1996 accrued 1181 children and adolescents with low-grade glioma. 61 patients (5.2%) had tumor dissemination, with 2.8% being present at diagnosis. Frequencies of dissemination for different subgroups were calculated. Efficiency of first-line CT with vincristine/carboplatin was defined in 24 children with dissemination prior to first-line non-s…

Current challenges in metastasis: Disseminated and circulating tumor cells detection

2014

Metastatic dissemination of the primary tumor is responsible for the majority of cancer-related morbidity and mortality. Detection of disseminated tumor cells in the bone marrow and circulating tumor cells in the peripheral blood is associated with early metastatic recurrence in cancer. Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) shed from the site of disease in metastatic or primary tumor that can be recognized and enriched in the peripheral blood of cancer patients. The detection of rare circulating tumor cells (CTC) is an objective of numerous oncologists' researches. Circulating tumor cells have the potential to help to detect cancer recurrence at its earlier stage, determine therapy resistance befo…
